I manned a stall at a year 10 careers fair at St Bernards High School, Westcliff earlier in the week. I was ably assisted by AECOM engineer Laura Cockle and between us we were promoting careers in the Civil Engineering industry and engineering generally as representatives of The Institution of Civil Engineers.
Over the evening we talked to a dozen or so groups of students and parents – most of whom seemed genuinely interested in careers in engineering and civil engineering. I also got the opportunity to speak to some of the teachers – the Assistant Head Teacher being a trained civil engineer – though not a practising one having gone straight into teaching after graduating!
As the numbers tailed off I decided to dust of my circular hollow sections and re-assemble part of my paper bridge which drew some interest from teachers and other exhibitors alike. The completed bridge (which I used to explain basic structural theory to some teachers) was taken home by one of the keen students!
The evening was made complete by changing a friends wheel/tyre after it was discovered to be flat in the car park!
